How The Colcot Arms appears

The Colcot Arms in Barry doubles for Smithy’s local in Billericay, a clear example of Wales supplying an Essex screen setting. Visit Wales identifies the quiz-night scenes in the second episode, while Visit the Vale records the pub’s return for Smithy’s stag celebrations in the finale. The real destination is therefore Barry rather than Essex. Its long-running connection spans the early sitcom and the later special, but an ordinary visit remains a visit to a working local pub.

The real place

What you can visit

The actual Colcot Arms serves local customers and visitors under its own pub arrangements. It is away from the island promenade, so treat it as a deliberate meal or drink stop rather than an incidental seafront photograph. Interior access belongs to customers during trading hours and does not include a promised filming tour. If you want to photograph the room, ask staff first and respect people using the pub; the layout and decoration can change independently of the television production.

Book or confirm a normal customer visit if the interior matters; do not expect staff to recreate the quiz-night scene.

Getting there.

Use the Colcot Arms bus stop on Colcot Road for a short final approach, or book a taxi from Barry station rather than extending the seaside loop on foot. Drivers use the pub’s customer parking under its posted restrictions. Allow a few minutes from arrival to the public entrance. Food service and bar hours follow the pub’s own calendar, with separate arrangements for private events.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Is Smithy’s pub actually in Essex?

The Billericay local was filmed at the Colcot Arms in Barry. Visit Wales identifies the early quiz scene, making this a documented Welsh stand-in for an Essex story location.

Which episodes are linked here?

The second episode of series one is supported by the Visit Wales quiz-night reference. The Visit the Vale finale trail separately records Smithy’s stag-party stop, supporting the final-special connection.

Can I arrive as a filming-tour visitor?

Use the pub as an ordinary customer and ask about any photography. Its business service takes priority, and neither the filming credit nor this guide promises access to a particular table or room.
