How Academy Coffee exterior appears

Academy Coffee’s exterior is identified by Visit the Vale as the outside shot for Sonia’s hen celebrations in the 2024 finale. The interior party scene is a separate filming location at Cardiff’s Parkgate Hotel, so this guide keeps the two places distinct. Barry supplies the real café frontage, while editing combines it with another building for the screen sequence. An exterior credit therefore supports a frontage stop but does not imply that the café contains the suite seen during the party.

The real place

What you can visit

Academy operates as a café business rather than a preserved television set. Its public-facing exterior is the relevant filming feature, and a normal coffee visit is an optional addition. Staff and customers should be able to use the entrance without navigating a photography queue. Indoor access follows the business’s trading arrangements and should not be presented as a route to the hen-party room. Keep any visit focused on the real café and its role within a broader Barry town walk.

Keep the exterior and interior locations separate in your plans: the party suite belongs to the Parkgate Hotel in Cardiff.

Getting there.

From Barry station, allow about ten to fifteen minutes on foot towards the Hood Road waterfront as a planning estimate. Park only in designated bays serving the waterfront and follow their restrictions, rather than stopping at the café door. Academy’s business hours govern indoor refreshments; the filming credit is for the outside, which can be seen from the public street. Allow extra time if combining it with a meal.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Was Sonia’s party inside this café?

The council filming trail identifies the exterior shot here. Visit Wales separately names the Parkgate Hotel’s Telegraph Suite for the party interior, so the complete sequence uses more than one real building.

Do I need to enter for the filming connection?

No. The credited feature is the café frontage, visible from the public street. Go inside only as a normal customer during trading hours and ask before photographing other people or interior spaces.

Can I combine it with Cardiff?

Yes, if you allow time for the rail or road transfer. A Barry café stop and a Cardiff hotel visit form a regional itinerary rather than one continuous pedestrian route.

Build it into the day.

Hood Road Tunnel is another finale location to consider on a town walk, with time allowed for the route between them.
