On screen

Its appeal is the wider stone village, river setting and surrounding countryside, rather than a single building that visitors need to enter. The Cotswolds tourism description links Upper and Lower Slaughter through the River Eye, while the National Landscape's walking directions pass through Upper Slaughter's village square and towards the ford.

These are useful public landmarks for an unhurried look at the village. Treat the screen connection as a reason to notice the relationship between lanes, buildings and landscape, while remembering that this remains a residential community. Private houses and gardens form much of the view, and admiring them from a public route does not make their entrances or grounds part of a visitor attraction.

Visiting Upper Slaughter

For a visit on foot, use the Cotswolds National Landscape's published route information to connect the village with Lower Slaughter. Its directions describe a path beyond the mill in Lower Slaughter, through gates and over a footbridge, reaching the road into Upper Slaughter and then the village square.

Download or carry the full route rather than using a filming photograph as navigation. The published Bourton circular is a substantial countryside walk; a shorter out-and-back visit to the two villages requires its own realistic plan and time allowance. Expect changes in surface and weather along rural paths, wear suitable footwear and keep to signed public rights of way.

If you start in Bourton-on-the-Water, the National Landscape identifies paid car parks and bus connections there. This can provide a practical base without assuming parking will be available in a small village lane. When you reach Upper Slaughter, pause where the road allows pedestrians to stand safely, keep residents' entrances clear and continue to the river or countryside route only where access is public.

The same care applies to taking photographs: choose a broad village view without pointing into windows or gardens.
