On screen

Chipping Norton Theatre is a Father Brown Series 13 filming location named by Mark Williams in a Radio Times interview. The published account identifies the theatre as a former Salvation Army citadel, but does not give a named fictional venue or a precise episode match.

In real life it is a working theatre in Spring Street, in the centre of the Oxfordshire market town. That makes it a different kind of stop from a village exterior: the building's public life comes through performances, screenings and organised visits, rather than a permanent television display.

If you want to see beyond the entrance, the theatre's own backstage tours are the relevant visitor option. They describe the building as a historic working theatre and give an insight into how its productions are put together.

Visiting The Theatre Chipping Norton

Choose between attending an event and enquiring about an arranged backstage tour. The theatre's tour description starts in the bar, takes in the balcony and a backstage corridor, continues onto the stage and looks into dressing rooms and the attic props and costume store. These are organised group tours led by the front-of-house manager, not areas to explore independently.

The published guidance says the route includes narrow spaces and parts reached only by stairs. Contact the theatre with any access requirements before arranging a group visit. For a performance, use the separate access pages: they cover mobility, hearing and visual needs, companion arrangements and relaxed events.

Accessibility information for offsite events can differ from the Spring Street building, so check the individual event listing as well.

Plan your visit

Build this stop into the day.

Make the theatre the evening or indoor anchor of a Chipping Norton visit. A walk around the market town fits better than trying to add a distant Cotswold village between a tour and curtain time. Allow a separate day for Blockley's church and residential streets.
