How Royal Holloway Founder's Building appears

Visit Surrey lists Royal Holloway's Founder's Building among the places in the county where Call the Midwife has filmed. It does not say which scenes were shot here or which fictional building it played, so this guide does not attach it to a particular episode or Poplar address. The connection is worth knowing because Surrey is the production's working base: the Nonnatus House sets are at Longcross Studios a few miles away, which makes nearby period buildings like this one a practical choice for scenes that need grand Victorian architecture. On screen, any such scene is set in London; the building itself is a university in the Surrey countryside.

The real place

What you can visit

The Founder's Building is the red-brick and stone centrepiece of Royal Holloway, University of London, built in the 1880s for Thomas Holloway's women's college and modelled on the French Renaissance château of Chambord. It is a Grade I listed building with two great quadrangles, towers and a chapel, and it still houses offices, teaching rooms and student accommodation. Visitors can see its exterior from the public campus areas, but it is a working university, so classrooms, residences and offices are not open, and access can be limited during exams, graduations and events.

This is a place of study and home to students: keep to public areas, keep noise down and do not photograph people in residences.

Getting there.

Royal Holloway is on Egham Hill (TW20 0EX). Egham station, on the line from London Waterloo and Reading, is about a 15 to 20 minute uphill walk. Campus parking is limited and mainly for staff, students and booked visitors, so public transport is easier. Paths around the building are generally paved with some slopes.
