How Grassington appears
Grassington is the production's principal Darrowby. The square, The Devonshire and several operating shopfronts are dressed for filming; the period signs, road surfaces and props are temporary, so an ordinary visit looks different from the finished programme.
The real place
What you can visit
Grassington is a working Yorkshire Dales village, not a preserved set. Start at Market Place, use the National Park Centre car park and allow time for the real shops and cafés. The Dales Way continues towards Linton Falls and, in roughly 3.5 miles, Burnsall.
Begin at the public market square, where the Drovers exterior and Endleby's shopfront are close together. The Skeldale House exterior is a private home: stay in public space, do not approach the door and do not photograph into the house. For a longer outing, follow the Dales Way towards Linton Falls or continue to Burnsall.
Use the Grassington National Park Centre car park and keep homes and business entrances clear.
Screen Yorkshire: Grassington ↗From the National Park Centre, use the official village paths and the Dales Way towards Linton Falls. Burnsall is about 3.5 miles away on the signed route; weather and riverside conditions can change.
Common questions
Planning a responsible visit
Is Darrowby a real place?
No. Darrowby is fictional; Grassington supplies its principal market-town exteriors, with Arncliffe, Kettlewell and Ripley contributing other scenes.
Was the series filmed in Thirsk?
The Ritz Cinema in Thirsk was used, but modern Darrowby is Grassington. Thirsk is where Alf Wight lived and worked.
Can I watch filming?
No public filming schedule is promised. Streets remain working public spaces and production areas must be left clear.
Where should I park?
Use the Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre car park and check the National Park's current car-park information before travelling.
