How Gloucester Cathedral appears

Gloucester Cathedral supplies several identities in the first series, including Blackfriars and Calais Castle interiors. For The Mirror and the Light, PBS is more specific: Cromwell’s meeting with Wolsey’s daughter and the emotional cloister sequence belong to episode two. A visit therefore brings together a broad early-series credit and a named later scene. The story moves through religious houses and royal territory, while the real filming site remains a working cathedral in Gloucester, with worship taking priority over scene matching.

The real place

What you can visit

The cathedral and cloisters can be visited within the published visitor hours, subject to services, events and conservation work. Do not assume every cloister bay is accessible: the cathedral’s fabric programme can change the walking route. Look at the architecture as a whole before trying to find a particular camera angle. A quiet weekday allows time for the nave and cloister without rushing between groups. Interior photography and filming must follow the cathedral’s instructions, especially during prayer and services.

Give way to worshippers and accept that a service may close a filming area during your visit.

Getting there.

Gloucester station is about a fifteen-minute walk from the cathedral through the city centre. Drivers can use city-centre car parks, including the Westgate side, and finish on foot rather than entering Cathedral Close by car. Visitor hours sit around the worship calendar throughout the year. Allow a longer visit if you want a separately booked tour; not all surfaces are level.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

What does Gloucester Cathedral play in Wolf Hall?

Gloucester Cathedral supplies Blackfriars and Calais in 2015; Cromwell’s convent visit in 2024. This page keeps its real visitor setting in Gloucester, Gloucestershire separate from the story’s geography.

How should I arrive?

Allow around fifteen minutes from Gloucester station through the city centre, or use designated city parking and finish on foot. Services and events influence visitor access, so give your arrival a flexible margin.

What can I see on a visit?

The cathedral offers the public nave and available cloister route around worship and conservation work. A filming credit does not promise access to every bay or room, and photography follows cathedral instructions.
