How Caerphilly Castle appears

Caerphilly Castle contributes to the Tower of London in the 2015 Wolf Hall series. The National Trust’s production location map records the connection, placing this Welsh fortress within the drama’s London geography. It is one of several real castles used to build the screen version of the Tower, rather than a claim that every Tower scene was filmed here. Visitors should come to Caerphilly town in South Wales, keeping the actual destination separate from the London setting of Cromwell’s story.

What you can visit

Cadw manages Caerphilly Castle as a public heritage attraction. The water and defensive buildings create a very different visit from the furnished houses elsewhere in this guide, so leave room to experience the castle itself. Historic surfaces, changes in level and outdoor sections can affect how much a group comfortably covers. Use Cadw’s access information for the route through the attraction, and allow for Welsh weather when choosing footwear and planning a break in the surrounding town.

Allow time for the town-centre approach and the castle grounds, especially after rain on historic paving.

Getting there.

Cadw places the castle around ten minutes’ walk from Caerphilly railway station. The town-centre setting also makes arrival by bus practical, subject to local timetables. Drivers can use council parking at the Twyn rather than seeking parking inside the monument. Consult the castle’s dated opening schedule before departure, since last admission can leave less exploring time than the closing hour suggests.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Which London landmark does Caerphilly play?

Caerphilly Castle represents the Tower of London in the 2015 series. The production used several places for that screen setting, so the credit is not a complete Tower scene list.

Is there a railway station nearby?

Caerphilly station is within walking distance; Cadw gives an approach of about ten minutes. Keep extra time for finding the entrance and buying admission after the train arrives.

Can I drive into the castle grounds?

Use public visitor parking in the town, including council parking at the Twyn. The castle is a heritage monument, so follow the pedestrian approach from the surrounding streets.

Plan your visit

Build it into the day.

Bristol Cathedral belongs to the same production trail but lies across the Severn; plan it as a separate regional stop.
