How Broughton Castle appears

Broughton Castle doubles for several places in the first series, including Windsor Castle and Kimbolton, associated in the story with Katherine of Aragon. The National Trust filming map names these roles, and the castle’s own location-hire record confirms its use for series one. The real building is a moated Oxfordshire manor near Banbury. Water, stone and enclosed rooms give the programme a royal atmosphere, while the location itself has a history and household distinct from the screen characters passing through it.

The real place

What you can visit

The castle opens to visitors on selected dates during its season, with the house, garden and moat setting forming the main visit. This is still a lived-in historic property, so follow the public circuit and the arrival instructions. A quick roadside look misses the building’s relationship to the moat and garden. A couple of hours is a more useful allowance than a brief photograph stop, particularly if a house tour is offered. Book transport around the published opening day rather than expecting daily admission.

The moat is part of the setting, not a place to scramble down for a screen photograph.

Getting there.

Banbury station is the nearest practical railway arrival; arrange a taxi for the short rural leg to Broughton and the return. Drivers use castle visitor parking and walk a few minutes across the approach. There are limited seasonal opening afternoons, so match your travel date to the castle calendar. The moat edge and older floors call for care with children and anyone uneasy on steps.
