Plan a responsible visit

Visiting Derry Girls filming locations

Start with one compact Derry day. The walls, Guildhall, mural and Tower Museum sit within the central visitor area, but the hills, admission times and photograph stops add up. Choose a wall entrance that suits your mobility needs and put the museum at a fixed point in the plan if its exhibition is a priority. Leave the Bogside or a river crossing as a flexible extension rather than committing the whole group to every stop before seeing the weather and surfaces.

The second walking idea connects Bogside landmarks with the riverfront and Peace Bridge. It mixes actual filming places with a clearly labelled modern visitor connection, so read the role notes before setting out. Long Tower and the old city involve gradients, while the bridge can be exposed to wind. A route that looks short on a phone can still be tiring if it repeatedly climbs and descends. Carry suitable footwear and use a taxi or local transport to remove a section that does not suit the group.

Belfast is a separate day or overnight addition. Check the train or Goldline departure and arrival points before booking a meal or deciding which church opening you can reach. A Belfast route can combine the market, the parish church and a food stop, but each has its own operating schedule. Schools and colleges are working education sites, so they are not included as places to enter or photograph. If your main interest is a specific interior, confirm access before paying for a long transfer between cities.

For a guided alternative, Visit Derry lists screen walking tours and identifies Martin McCrossan City Tours as one named option. Confirm the meeting point and present route with the operator before booking. A guided walk can help with city orientation, but it does not change the privacy boundaries around homes, schools or church activities, and you can still explore the public landmarks independently.

By rail

Translink provides the Belfast to Derry~Londonderry railway connection. Derry’s rail arrival is at the North West Transport Hub on the Waterside, across the Foyle from the old centre. A walk using the Peace Bridge can be part of the visit, with roughly twenty-five to thirty-five minutes to the Guildhall as an untested planning estimate. Allow longer with luggage, children or mobility needs, and choose an onward bus or taxi when an exposed crossing does not suit. Use the dated Translink planner for actual departures and engineering changes.

Buses

Ulsterbus Goldline offers an alternative between Belfast and Derry~Londonderry. Check the dated service and terminal information with Translink rather than relying on a fixed journey duration or frequency. City-side bus arrivals can place you nearer the central walks than the Waterside railway hub, but the useful arrival depends on the service operating that day. Plan the last suitable return before choosing an evening meal or a late museum stop, and leave time to reach the correct departure point from whichever part of the city you finish in.

Parking and driving

For central Derry stops, choose a designated car park and walk between locations instead of moving the car after every photograph. Bishop Street suits the upper old-city side, Foyleside provides a central shopping-area option, and Ebrington can be useful for a Waterside approach where parking is permitted. Follow current signs, restrictions and operator directions at the actual entrance. Residential streets, church access, bus stops and narrow historic approaches are not overflow filming-tour parking. In Belfast, use a suitable city-centre car park and allow walking time to the individual businesses.

Seasons and opening

The public streets and bridge are outdoor, year-round options, while museum exhibitions, the Guildhall, markets, churches and restaurants follow separate opening arrangements. Winter daylight affects the time available for the walls and Bogside hills, and wet stone can make a short route slower. Major city events can also change access or crowd levels. The Tower Museum’s displays have changed during 2026: the council says the Derry Girls Experience continues after the closure of the Story of Derry exhibition. Use the current admission information for what is actually open.

Accessibility.

Plan by surface and gradient as well as distance. The walls have different entrance arrangements, the old city rises above the river, and Bogside-to-centre routes can add a noticeable climb. Ask the museum or another indoor venue about its visitor entrance and accessible route if it is a fixed point of the day. A bridge walk may be easier underfoot than stone steps but still be uncomfortable in strong wind. Split optional loops where helpful, meeting again at a public square or booked café that everyone can comfortably reach.

Private means private.

Homes, residential streets and working schools are outside the visitor map and routes. There are no house numbers, private frontage photographs or accommodation searches for them. Keep church activity, remembrance, local shopping and ordinary transport use ahead of any attempt to match a television angle. Ask before photographing in a restaurant, market stall or church interior. A public street credit does not allow entry into nearby gardens, staff rooms or yards, and a museum set is the appropriate public alternative for fans wanting to experience the programme’s domestic world.

Before departure: Confirm the actual opening day, any admission or transport booking, and the full return journey. A closed attraction is a reason to shorten or rearrange the sequence.

Retained planning references

The mural is a commissioned tribute and the museum a later exhibition. Neither is described as a filming set. Keep civic events and museum admission times in the plan.
