How Chiltern Open Air Museum appears

Chiltern Open Air Museum lists Call the Midwife among the productions it has hosted and shows the crew filming at its 1940s prefab, a single-storey factory-built house of the kind put up in their thousands after the war to rehouse bombed-out families. In the series, prefabs like this are homes in Poplar, and the story places them in the East End. The museum does not say which episode used the prefab or which family lived there on screen, so this guide does not link it to an episode. The setting fits the show's world closely: the midwives spend much of their time in exactly this kind of modest post-war home.

The real place

What you can visit

The museum, at Newland Park near Chalfont St Peter, has rescued more than thirty historic buildings from across the Chilterns and rebuilt them in woods and fields, from an Iron Age house to a Victorian tin chapel, a toll house and the prefab, which came from Amersham. Rooms in the prefab are furnished as a 1940s family home with original kitchen fittings, which makes it one of the most popular buildings on site. The museum opens seasonally and is ticketed, with special event days through the year. Check current opening dates and prices on its website, and whether the prefab is open on the day you choose.

The prefab is small: on busy event days, wait your turn and leave the furnished rooms as you find them.

Getting there.

The museum is on Gorelands Lane, Chalfont St Peter (HP8 4AB), with on-site parking. The nearest stations are Chalfont & Latimer and Gerrards Cross, both a taxi ride away. Paths across the site are a mix of grass, gravel and hard surfaces and can be muddy after rain; some buildings have steps, so check access details before you visit.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Did Call the Midwife film at Chiltern Open Air Museum?

Yes. The museum lists the series on its filming page and illustrates the crew working at its 1940s prefab.

Which episode used the prefab?

The museum has not named one, so this guide does not tie it to a particular episode. It is best visited as a real example of the post-war homes seen across the series.

Can you go inside the prefab?

Usually, when the museum is open, as it is furnished as a 1940s home. Check on the day, since individual buildings can close for events or maintenance.
