How The Old Forge, Shilton appears

The Old Forge at Shilton supplies the Red Lion exterior in fictional Kirbymoorside, where Anna finds Bates working after he leaves Downton. The small building beside the ford creates a very different setting from the Abbey and helps establish his changed circumstances. This is an exterior connection, not an invitation to find a pub interior behind the façade. The name Red Lion belongs to the drama’s identity for the building; arriving in the real village expecting that establishment to serve visitors would misunderstand the role.

The real place

What you can see

Shilton is a small residential Oxfordshire village around a lane, ford and low stone bridge. The property used on screen is private, and there is no managed production attraction or public interior. The public streetscape provides the context: water crossing, bridge and buildings together make a recognisable composition. Traffic and residents continue to use the narrow space, so lingering in the carriageway or on an entrance creates a real obstruction. Appreciate the village from a public position without turning a private home into the centre of a gathering.

Treat the ford and bridge as the wider public setting; the private building needs no close-up inspection to explain the screen connection.

Getting there.

Keep the stop brief and use public space only. Do not approach the building, knock, peer through windows or seek an interior visit. Avoid blocking the ford, bridge and residential access while taking a wide photograph. Choose another attraction as the main purpose of the day, and leave Shilton out if parking or traffic makes a considerate pause impractical.

Common questions

Planning a responsible visit

Can I have a drink at the Red Lion here?

The Red Lion is the fictional identity given to the Old Forge exterior. The building is private, not an operating Downton-themed pub. Plan refreshments elsewhere and do not approach it expecting service or public admission.

Can I enter the property?

No visitor access is offered here. Remain on public space and respect the residents’ doors, windows and access. A filming credit does not make a private building available to tour groups or independent visitors.

Is this a good stop for a large group?

The small lane, ford and bridge leave little room for a gathering. A brief, quiet public-street view may be possible, but skip the stop if it would block traffic or inconvenience residents. Nearby Cogges is better suited to a substantial group visit.

Private means private

See it only from public space.

Cogges makes the substantial visitor stop in this region. Shilton is an optional streetscape pause rather than a destination for a dedicated driving trip.
